National Night Out

What is National Night Out? It's America's Night Out Against Crime!

The "26th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) has been scheduled for Tuesday, October 6, 2009.

Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities from all 50 states.  In all, over 37 million people particpated in National Night Out 2008.  Strengthen our neighborhood by getting to know your neighbors this Tuesday night.  Turn on your porch light; take a walk around the block after dark with your dog and/or flashlight; have a party in your cove or in a neighbors backyard.  Make Halle Plantation a neighborhood that criminals avoid!

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

More information about the history of NATW and National Night Out can be found here.

What Is Neighborhood Watch?

Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that enlists the active participation of residents in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime, solve problems, and improve the quality of life in your area.  In it you will get to know and work with your neighbors, and learn how to:

  • Recognize and report crimes and suspicious activities,
  • Protect yourself, your family, and your property,
  • Protect your neighbor’s family and property, and
  • Identify crime and disorder problems in your area and work with Collierville Police personnel to solve them.

Duties of the Block Captain

Do you know who your Block Captain is?
Go to the menu item on your left to find out now!

After a group or "BLOCK"  is formed the duties of the Block Captain will depend on their organizational skills and interests, and the nature and objectives of the group.  The following are some possibilities:

  • Recruit new members
  • Maintain a membership list and area map with home addresses
  • Keep members informed about area crime and disorder
  • Try to see group members frequently
  • Establish and maintain a phone tree with home and work numbers that group members can use to contact residents in an emergency
  • Develop an area activity profile to help members recognize unusual or suspicious activities in the area.  This could include vehicle descriptions, work hours, school hours for children, and scheduled services, e.g., gardening
  • Act as a spokesperson for the group
  • Serve as liaison with the Collierville Police Dept.
  • Plan, announce, and facilitate meetings
  • Organize crime prevention activities, e.g., watching homes when residents are away
