 Rebuilding Collierville Middle School
School leaders, city officials discuss possible land swap in plan to rebuild Collierville Middle
Sherri Drake Silence
June 16, 2010

Shelby County school leaders hope to secure funding this year to replace an out-of- date Collierville Middle, but an official site for the new school hasn't been decided.

The middle school campus, located near town square in the heart of the historic district, is a collection of five buildings from various eras, with the oldest built in the mid-1930s and for years the site of Collierville High.

The district's plan on paper is to tear down the buildings — with the exception of the old high school — in phases and build a new middle school on the 9-acre campus.  But school planning officials and Collierville leaders are discussing a possible land swap that would relocate the middle school less than a mile from its current location at 146 College St. and give the town control of the current site with the treasured old high school, which is on the National Historic Registry.

Collierville Town Administrator James Lewellen said the land swap deal is in the early phases of talks and that many feasibility questions are still unanswered.  The proposed location of the new school is Suggs Park, located on about 16 acres just off of Center Street.

"We're kind of in the what-if stages," Lewellen said this week. "There's a lot of things that could derail the idea."

Still being discussed is how much land the school district would need to build a new middle school and what the town would do with the old high school, which needs to be brought up to current building codes.

The deadline to make a decision is August or September, when the school district will find out if it won the $13 million in Qualified School Construction Bonds requested through the Shelby County Commission for the middle school replacement.

If there's no deal by the deadline, then the district will move forward with plans to replace the school on its current site, said Richard Holden, Shelby schools' chief of operations. The old high school building would not be used after the replacement.

"The school district doesn't want to see it torn down, but we just don't have a need for it," Holden said.

If there's a land swap, the new middle school would likely be ready by August 2012. It would take another year to get all the students under one roof if the school's replaced on the current site.

According to the district's annual capital needs improvement report, the replacement is needed to meet current building and safety codes and to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Longtime Shelby school board member Joe Clayton, who graduated from the old Collierville High in 1950, said it's important to preserve the old building, where he remembers paying 15 cents for a small pecan pie and bottle of chocolate milk at lunch on Fridays and watching movies in the auditorium for a dime.

Clayton said he's interested to know how the town would use the old school.

"It's just a beautiful building. I don't see it ever going away," Clayton said. " ... I do have faith in our city leaders and I do believe they'll work out a plan that will be acceptable to all."

Donate Books

The Friends Again Book Store and the “ Friends of the Collierville Burch Library” need book donations to sell at the store and at semi-annual book sales. The sale of donated books along with used books from the Library are major fundraisers for the “Friends of the Library”.  Their funds are often used to help support the Library and provide special materials and programs.

Donated books can be dropped off at the Friends Again Book Store in the Library during the week and on weekends. For more information contact Diane Cook at 853-5542.
